12/02/08 ~ Joe Martinez, Pharmacist & Type 1 Diabetic

This week Kitty and Dr. Fallon will interview Joe Martinez, Pharmacist and Type 1 Diabetic. Listener’s are invited to call in with their questions and comments. Tuesday Evening 8:00PM ~ 9:00PM (EST) Cruisin 92.1 FM~WVLT, streaming live on the web at www.wvlt.com Call In: 856-696-0092

Joe Martinez

Joe Martinez has had diabetes for over 16 years. He is a pharmacist, diabetic educator and insulin-pump using diabetic. The first two years he was on varying oral medications. He then progressed to injectable glargine insulin and quickly added rapid-acting insulin injections to his therapy regimen.

He considers himself in good control now using an insulin-pump with rapid-acting insulin and meal-time injections of pramlintide. Joe’s A1C numbers usually range from 6.3 to 6.7 depending on the time on year and how much traveling he does for work.

Joe and his wife Michele have three sons and live in the Princeton area of New Jersey. He enjoys coaching his son’s basketball team. Joe feels that he’s in better shape now with diabetes, than he was 25 years ago without diabetes. He takes the time to eat better, exercise more (he can do better here) and maintains a positive outlook on life.

Diabetes runs in Joe’s family. Both his grandmother’s were diabetic, as well as, his father is a Type 2 diabetic. One day he brought a glucose monitor home to show his father how to use it. After a Sunday meal of ravioli, broccoli and garlic bread, his father’s sugar level was 144 and Joe’s was 253. A quick trip to the doctors office and it was confirmed - diabetes.

At first, Joe couldn’t believe it. The reality of it slowly sank in. He then wanted to know as much about the disease as possible. His motivation was that someday, he wanted to run around with his grandchildren, with his own two legs and not in a wheel chair. Joe often says that he’s in better shape now, than he was 25 years ago - just making lemonade when you’re given lemons!

“It’s not what happens to you but how you respond that the key”. Joe is constantly talking to doctors and other health care professionals about the need for “appropriate therapy for the appropriate patient” in diabetes management.

In addition, he tries to personalize the diabetes patient to people who may not have an awareness of what the challenges of diabetes therapy are and how the disease will progress. Joe believes that one day their will be a cure for diabetes and he works to be part of the solution.

11/11/08 ~ Greg Bauer, Type 1 Diabetic

This week Kitty and Dr. Fallon will interview Greg Bauer, Type One Diabetic. Listener’s are invited to call in with their questions and comments. Tuesday Evening 8:00PM ~ 9:00PM (EST) Cruisin 92.1 FM~WVLT, streaming live on the web at www.wvlt.com Call In: 856-696-0092

Greg Bauer

Greg Bauer is a 34 year old sales representative who works for a Bio-Pharmaceutical company covering Philadelphia and Southern Jersey; his sales focus is on diabetes management. He has been working in the Diabetes industry for 5 years. He began his career selling insulin pumps and then moved to Amylin Pharmaceuticals, Inc. who market two medications that help treat both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. It was not by chance that Greg found himself working in the Diabetes industry; it was a choice he made. Greg has a special inertest in helping people with Diabetes; he has had Type 1 for over 20 years.

He remembers the day that he was diagnosed like it was yesterday. “I had all of the classic symptoms of the disease: unquenching thirst, frequent urination, lack of energy and losing weight. I remember asking my Dad if something was wrong with me.” He said, “Why do you ask?” I told him, “I LOVED WATER and could not get enough of it.” My Dad didn’t know how to respond so to be on the safe side he scheduled an appointment with my family doctor. When they tested my blood glucose it read “HIGH”. We were sitting in my doctor’s office when he told me that I had Diabetes; I remember thinking that I was going to die! Needless to say my life changed forever on June 7, 1988.

Growing up with a disease like Diabetes presented a number of challenges for me and family. For example, low blood glucose, high blood glucose, trips to the hospital, poor control, better control, and now great control - last 4 A1C’s under 6.5! Throughout my 20 years of living this disease I have experienced it all, the highs of success and blood glucose, the lows and severe hypoglycemia.

When people discover that I have Diabetes the typical response is, “I feel bad for you or that stinks.” My response is always the same, “I feel fortunate that I have a manageable disease, that does take a lot of discipline, but that’s fine with me.” There are so many other unmanageable diseases that are killing people everyday. I was told that I would be able to live a “normal” life; that helped me keep focus.

Most importantly, I truly believe that we are all dealt a hand in life; what you choose to do with that hand is up to the individual person. Diabetes was one of the cards that were dealt to me; with the help of my support system of family and friends, I am able to manage the ups and downs of the disease to live a normal life. I currently live in West Chester, Pennsylvania with my wife, Valerie, and our dog, Hana. We enjoy traveling and spending time with our family and friends.

Dr. Andrew R. Schwartz

I have been an active medical practitioner for over 40 years with training in infectious diseases, internal medicine, and geriatrics.

I have served abroad in the tropics with the United States Army and as the Post Surgeon at the Army Biological Warfare Laboratories. Subsequent to that I have been in the practice of internal medicine, infectious diseases, and geriatrics and academic medicine first at Hahnemann Medical College and Hospital in Philadelphia where I was Professor of Medicine and Microbiology until 1980, and subsequently in private practice here in Cherry Hill, New Jersey.

My interests obviously lie in the three areas listed above (internal medicine, infectious diseases, and geriatrics) and in this vein I have had the opportunity to come across patients who suffer from diabetes mellitus and its complications in multiple ways.

The DRI Diabetes 2.0 Update in New York City

New York City again! Yes, it was my second trip back to a beautiful city that I hope to one day get to explore. Dr. Fallon and I drove up very early in the morning, leaving his office around 5:30am to attend the Diabetes Research Institute Diabetes 2.0 Update.

The day started off as the elevator doors open and there was Bob Pearlman, President of The DRIF. It was such a pleasure to see him again, the three of us had a nice visit before the day got started. It was so nice to see many of the family as I refer to the outstanding group from Miami. We got to visit with Gary Kleiman and finally meet his brother Glenn Kleiman, the voice behind the DRI Minute, which can be heard on our show each week. Lori Weintraub and I finally got to meet after working with each other for several years. Yes, I did get my hug from Dr. Camillo Ricordi and I have to say he looks pretty darn handsome! Wow, he just looks great, as he has just recently lost 40lbs… Way to go Camillo!

The day was just outstanding to all who attended. Many Scientist from around the world and guest speakers were in attendance giving talks throughout the day.

The State of Diabetes Research: A Global View, by Dr. Camillo Ricordi

The start of the 21st. century brought with it technical innovations and unprecedented opportunities that have already begun to revolutionize medical research. Powerful new tools are enabling physicians and scientist to combine engineering principles and nano-scale technology with biology to develop new ways to treat and cure diseases.

In his talk, Dr. Camillo Ricordi provided an overview of a new roadmap in cure-focused diabetes research - uniting leading investigators around the world to focus on several key research areas, including:

  • Tissue engineering to better protect transplanted cells and tissue
  • Exploring novel strategies to harness the enormous potential of adult and embryonic stem cells, to develop:
  1. A limitless supply of insulin-producing cells
  2. Cells capable of promoting cell survival
  3. Cells able to re-educate the immune system, so it would accept transplanted cells
  • The ability to promote islet regeneration in the native pancreas

Dr. Ricordi also reviewed the results of recent islet transplant studies conducted worldwide and explained how the emerging technologies are being applied to cell replacement strategies aimed at restoring natural insulin production in those living with diabetes.

Dr. Fallon and I enjoyed our day, as it was filled with so much information. During lunch we enjoyed a Panel Presentation; Research News: Hype or Hope? The Panelists of experts included: Moderator, Amy Tenderich, DiabetesMine.com, Jeff Hitchcock, Founder and President, Children With Diabetes, Fran Carpentier, Parade.com, Dr.Jay Skyler, DRI, Dr. Norma S. Kenyon,DRI, Dr. Wendy Satin Rapaport,DRI,
