Dr. Steven Nagelberg
Born in Hollywood, Florida in 1953, Dr. Steven Nagelberg became a New Yorker by the age of four. He attended Bucknell University before enrolling in Columbia University’s College of Physician & Surgeons in 1974 where he was named to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society. Following medical school, Dr. Nagelberg completed a three year residency in internal medicine at the University of California, San Francisco. He subsequently became a Clinical Fellow in the Clinical Endocrinology Branch at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. After being recruited to the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, Pa in 1985, he moved to Cherry Hill, New Jersey with his wife and two children. In 1987, Dr. Nagelberg joined a private practice of endocrinologists, Endocrine Metabolic Associates, in Bala Cynwyd, PA. He is now the senior member of that group which comprises seven endocrinologists and one nurse practitioner - it is presently the largest private practice endocrinology group in the Delaware Valley.
Dr. Nagelberg was Board Certified in Internal Medicine in 1981 and then Board Certified in Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism in 1985. He served as Physician Secretary for the Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism Board of the American Board of Internal Medicine followed by six years as a full Board Member. He still writes for the ABIM as a member of the Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism SEP Committee. Dr. Nagelberg formerly served on the Endocrine Society’s Clinical Initiative Committee and is currently a member of the Endocrine Society’s Planning Committee for the annual Clinical Endocrinology Update meeting. He is currently Clinical Professor of Medicine at Drexel University’s College of Medicine and Section Head, Metabolic Diseases and Endocrinology at Aria Health. He has been named a “Top Doc” year after year by Philadelphia Magazine and one of “America’s Top Physicians” by the Consumers’ Research Council of America. Dr. Nagelberg is a Fellow of both the American College of Physicians and the American College of Endocrinologists.

Dr. Pileggi’s primary research interests lie in transplantation immunobiology, autoimmunity and beta cell replacement therapies. His work focuses on developing cytoprotective strategies and maximizing the number and quality of transplantable islets. In addition, he is studying ways to improve long-term engraftment to redue the number of islets needed for each transplant procedure.
As a key member of the DRI’s multidisciplinary task force, Dr. Pilegi is working to develop ore sensitive tests to predict and assess islet viability. He contributes to the Institute’s research and academic activities including the development and testing of new transplant sites, cytoprotection, immunomodulation, tolerance, xeontransplantation, stem cell technology and clinical islet transplantation.
Dr. Pileggi received his medical degree from the University of Pavia Medical School in Italy. He subsequently earned his Ph.D. in Experimental and Microsurgery from the same institution.
Dr. Pileggi has authored many books and peer-reviewed publications in the field of organ and cellular transplantation, and has reviewed articles for several international scientific journals. He is a member of numerous scientific organizations and has served on research grant panels for international agencies.

Dan Kane was named Vice President Marketing, Diabetes Care in June of 2008. Dan held the Vice President Sales role in Diabetes Care from November of 2001 to June of 2008.
Dan joined Roche Diagnostics in 1989 as a Retail Account Manager in Rochester, New York, and over the past 20 years has held several management positions including National Account Manager, Regional Business Manager, Global Marketing Manager, Group Marketing Manager (Global) and Area Business Sales Director for Hospital and Health Care Professionals (HCP).

Guest Co-host Dr. Louis C. Hanel, Endocrinologist
Dr Louis C Haenel, IV, DO grew up in Cherry Hill and attended CH East HS. He attended Ursinus College in Collegeville, PA where he majored in biology and minored in athletic training. While at Ursinus, he captained both the football & track teams. He graduated from the University of Medicine & Dentistry of New Jersey - School of Osteopathic Medicine and then completed his internship and residency at UMDNJ-SOM/ Kennedy Memorial Hospital system. He completed his Endocrine fellowship training in diabetes, metabolism, and medical genetics at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, South Carolina.
After completion of his medical training, Dr Haenel went on to join his father Dr Louis Haenel, III, DO in private practice in Stratford, NJ. They are both on volunteer faculty at UMDNJ-SOM in Stratford where they teach the core didactic lecture series to the second year medical students. Dr Haenel has an inpatient clinical teaching service as well, where 3rd and 4th year students have an opportunity to work with interns, residents, and fellows. Dr Haenel is the associate program director of the UMDNJ-SOM endocrinology fellowship program and director of the American College of Osteopathic Internists endocrinology section.
Dr Haenel lectures and teaches extensively and has been an invited lecturer at many local and national conferences. He has authored several papers in peer reviewed journals and has been recognized for excellence in teaching with multiple “Teacher of the Year” and “Golden Apple” awards. He and his wife live in Haddonfield with their three children where he remains active in array of athletics.
