Riva Greenberg

Having lived with type 1 diabetes for 37 years, Riva is committed through her research, writing and lectures to help others live an exceptional life, not despite having diabetes but because of it, using diabetes as a catalyst to create a healthier, happier, more meaningful life. Riva is the author of 50 Diabetes Myths That Can Ruin Your Life: And the 50 Diabetes Truths That Can Save It” and “The ABCs Of Loving Yourself With Diabetes.” Riva has conducted more than 140 interviews with people living with diabetes, family members and diabetes professionals to inform her work and research. Riva travels across the U.S. delivering educational/motivational presentations to fellow patients as a peer-mentor and coaches patients to achieve better health. Riva also writes a blog on her web site, diabetesstories.com.

Experience

Riva is a communications professional with over twenty-five years experience in advertising, marketing, branding and change communication. Riva has provided strategic communications consulting for major corporations, creating motivational health and financial campaigns, and organizational change communications for companies in turn-around.  Her clients have included: Bank of America, Booz Allen & Hamilton, Clarion, Epson, Federal Express, Hitachi, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, Kaiser Permanente, Kenneth Cole, Kraft/General Foods, MetLife, National Service-Learning Partnership, Pitney Bowes, Pfizer and Sutter Health.

Riva has served as Director of Global Communications for Xceed Worldwide Group, Creative Director for Dentsu, Japan, one of the world’s largest advertising agencies and Creative Supervisor at Compton, Inc, New York City. In 2009 she was an advisor to Roche at their Diabetes Care Social Media Summit.

Awards

Distinctions: first place in the 2008 ‘Inspired by Diabetes Creative Expression competition’ sponsored by Eli Lilly and the International Diabetes Federation; the Gold Quill award from the International Association of Business Communicators; the ACE Award of Excellence for employee-relations communication and the Business Insurance Award of Excellence. Her first book,The ABC of Loving Yourself,” published by Random House, won the Australian Children’s Book of the Year award.

Raul Rosenthal MD FACS

Graduate of Medical School in Rosario , Argentina. Trained as a general surgeon at the Provincial Hospital in Rosario, Argentina between 1981 and 1983. Emigrated to Germany to repeat general surgical residency training between 1983 and 1990. Revalidated the MD degree and  obtained title of  general surgeon from the  German Society of Surgeons. Worked as attending surgeon until 1993 at the University Hospital, Krankenhaus Nordwest , Frankfurt, Germany. Emigrated to the US to work as a research fellow in MIS  at UCLA/Cedars Sinai Medical Center until 1996. Obtained MD degree ECFMG and repeated surgical residency training at The Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York. Since 1999 Chief Department of Minimally Invasive and Bariatric Surgery. Dr. Rosenthal is an Associate professor of surgery at the University of South Florida and is the Director of the Minimally Invasive and Bariatric Fellowship Program at Cleveland Clinic, Weston Florida. Dr. Rosenthal is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, Fellow of the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgeons and Honorary Fellow of the German Society of Visceral Surgery. He is an Active Member of the Board of Governors of SAGES. Medical Editor for Bariatric Times. Chair of the International Centers of Excellence Program in Bariatric Surgery of the SRC. Co-Chair of the Go Global Initiative, SAGES. Dr. Rosenthal is the Chair of the International Committee of the ASMBS and member of the Executive Board of the Fellowship Council. He is in addition an Active Member of the institutional Relations, Clinical Outcomes and Emerging Technology Committees of The American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgeons. Dr. Rosenthal has published over 150 papers in peer reviewed journals, he is the editor of 3 textbooks in general and endoscopic surgery and author of over 50 chapters in general surgery books.

Dr. Louis C. Hanel, Endocrinologist

Dr Louis C Haenel, IV, DO grew up in Cherry Hill and attended CH East HS.  He attended Ursinus College in Collegeville, PA where he majored in biology and minored in athletic training.  While at Ursinus, he captained both the football & track teams. He graduated from the University of Medicine & Dentistry of New Jersey – School of Osteopathic Medicine and then completed his internship and residency at UMDNJ-SOM/ Kennedy Memorial Hospital system.  He completed his Endocrine fellowship training in diabetes, metabolism, and medical genetics at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, South Carolina.

After completion of his medical training, Dr Haenel went on to join his father Dr Louis Haenel, III, DO in private practice in Stratford, NJ.  They are both on volunteer faculty at UMDNJ-SOM in Stratford where they teach the core didactic lecture series to the second year medical students.  Dr Haenel has an inpatient clinical teaching service as well, where 3rd and 4th year students have an opportunity to work with interns, residents, and fellows.  Dr Haenel is the associate program director of the UMDNJ-SOM endocrinology fellowship program and director of the American College of Osteopathic Internists endocrinology section.

Dr Haenel lectures and teaches extensively and has been an invited lecturer at many local and national conferences.  He has authored several papers in peer reviewed journals and has been recognized for excellence in teaching with multiple “Teacher of the Year” and “Golden Apple” awards.  He and his wife live in Haddonfield with their three children where he remains active in array of athletics.
