John F. Service, M.D., Ph.D.

Dr. F. John Service, a native of Canada, received his MDCM degree from the Faculty of Medicine, McGill University in 1962.  After a one-year stint as a General Medical Officer in Botwood, Newfoundland, he underwent post-doctoral training in Internal Medicine and Endocrinology at the Royal Victoria Hospital, Montreal Canada and at the Mayo Graduate School of Medicine, Rochester,  Minnesota.,   earning a Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota in 1972.  He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Canada, American College of Physicians, the American College of Endocrinology, and is an honorary member of the American Association of Endocrine Surgeons.  He is the first Earl and Annette R. McDonough Professor of Medicine of the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and the 2008 recipient of The Distinguished Physician.  Award of  The Endocrine Society . He is the former Editor-in-Chief of Diabetes Care and of Endocrine Practice, a principal investigator of the DCCT/EDIC and has made major contributions to the field of hypoglycemic disorders.
