April 25, 2012 ~ Dr. Melvin R. Stjernholm On Diabetes Management.

Melvin R. Stjernholm, M.D., FACP, FACP

Dr. Stjernholm is Clinical Professor of Medicine University of Colorado Health Sciences Center in Denver. He completed his fellowship in endocrinology at the University of Colorado and subsequently started private practice at Boulder Community Hospital in Boulder Colorado.  His practice has been limited to diabetes, thyroid disorders and osteoporosis.

He has done clinical research in the area of diabetes and published papers in multiple journals.  He is co-author of  “What to Do When the Doctor Says It’s Diabetes” .

Dr. Stjernholm is co-chair of the Clinical Diabetes Endocrine Institute held annually for the education of physicians and allied health professionals.

He is a member of the American Diabetes Association, the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists and the Endocrine Society.

He is past president of the Boulder County Medical Society  and board member of the Colorado Medical Society.

He has a major interest in international microenterprise development to help the poor improve their financial status.

Stephanie Smith, RD, CDE

Stephanie Smith, RD, CDE: Registered Dietitian and Certified Diabetes Educator provides outpatient nutrition counseling at Underwood Memorial Hospital in Woodbury, NJ.  She has provided nutrition care to patients at Underwood Memorial Hospital since 2003.

Stephanie graduated with honors from Messiah College with her Bachelor of Science in Nutrition and Dietetics. She spent time working in community nutrition with the WIC program and moved on to complete her dietetic internship with Sodexho in Philadelphia.

She teaches diabetes self management and nutrition as part of Underwood’s Diabetes program, an American Diabetes Association recognized program.  She also provides nutrition therapy for a variety of nutrition related issues including weight management, gastro intestinal disorders, cardiac, and food allergies.

Dr. John Mazzochette

Dr. Mazzochette is a psychiatrist with a private practice in Cherry Hill, NJ. He is chief of psychiatry section at Virtua Hospital in Voorhees, NJ and staff psychiatrist at Ancora Psychiatrist Hospital in Ancora, NJ. His interests include post-traumatic stress disorder and cross-cultural psychiatry. He is fellowship trained in cross-cultural psychiatry.

Dr. Richard O. Dolinar

A private practice Clinical Endocrinologist in Phoenix, Arizona, Dr. Dolinar received his undergraduate degree from Siena College in Albany, New York; his medical degree from The State University of New York at Buffalo and did his Endocrinology Fellowship at Duke University. He is a Senior Fellow in Healthcare Policy at the Heartland Institute.

Because he is an active clinician who treats patients his insights and opinions on healthcare issues are frequently sought. Dr. Dolinar has testified before the U.S. Senate Subcommittee on Consumer Affairs and has also given Congressional briefings on Capitol Hill. He has presented to state legislators as well as various healthcare industry professionals. Dr. Dolinar has also been interviewed by both the local and national media, including CNN, CBS and PBS.

A published author, in both professional and consumer publications, his articles and opinion pieces have appeared in The Wall Street Journal, USA Today, The New York Times, The New England Journal of Medicine, JAMA (Journal of the American Medical Association) Diabetes Research and the Indiana Health Law Review Journal. His articles have also appeared on various web sites including The Heritage Foundation. He is co-author of the book, Diabetes 101.

Dr. Dolinar is a member of the board of directors of the American Association of Physicians and Surgeons. He is a past board member of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists and serves on it’s National Legislative and Regulatory Committee. He is also the Chair of its Future of Healthcare Committee. Dr. Dolinar has held leadership positions in other professional organizations as well, including the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and the American Diabetes Association. He is on the Editorial Advisory Board for Endocrine Today.

Dr. Dolinar served as a Flight Surgeon in the Vietnam War and is a retired U.S. Air Force Colonel.
